In reponse to the news item Greece Continues to Tax Visiting Yachts a Noonsite visitor writes:

I cannot agree more that the Greek authorities are ignoring fundamental EU rights of free movement in their quest for charging "taxes" on cruising yachts, but I question the sense in harassing them too much. We spent a year in Greek waters and paid something like 80 euros in total for the "tax" and cruising permit, but then frequently enjoyed free marinas and harbour walls for as little as 1.50 a night, if collected at all. Surely, people should think ahead and realise that if the Greek authorities are effectively banned from charging their "taxes" they will simply impose much higher harbour fees instead. Which is better?
