Now in its fifth edition this useful guide to the Canarian archipelago has been thoroughly updated in the summer of 2005, a year in which several new marinas have come on stream. Every island now has at least one purpose built marina, a fact which will encourage more sailors to spend some time cruising the islands of the archipelago. In this they will be well served by this guide which describes in detail every marina and port, and lists all essential marine and shore facilities available.
The first part of the guide deals briefly with the historical background of this Spanish territory perched on the shoulder of Africa. Local weather conditions are described in detail, and the section on practical information deals with every subject that may be of interest to the visitor. Each of the eight inhabited islands is described in detail as is every one of their ports or marinas. Most port descriptions are accompanied by an aerial photograph. Repair facilities in the main centres are covered extensively with a comprehensive list of companies providing services to cruising yachts.
The guide is an indispensable aid to anyone planning to spend any time in the Canaries as an increasing number of yachts are now based there. The guide is just as useful for those intending to make only a brief stop in one of the major ports to prepare for an Atlantic crossing as it provides a complete list of available services. The Canary Islands Cruising Guide is published by World Cruising Club, organizers of the annual ARC transatlantic rally. The guide can be ordered directly from the publishers by downloading an order form from www.worldcruising.com/shop
