The new zero tax on importing yachts - does it apply to boat kits for assembly in Thailand as well?
By Thai customs law - of which I have a copy, it is stated quite clearly that a boat whether in broken-down form / kit or not appearing to be a boat but is a boat is to be considered as such. That being the case there should be no import duty. There would be VAT to pay at 7% and the usual clearance charges.
If you were to do that I would suggest the mast, sails, hatches and motors be in the kit as well.
There is a better alternative to Thailand for bringing in kits and all equipment. That is Langkawi, Malaysia. The island is totally duty free. They have excellent facilities for building. In fact we begun Monday building 3 x 15.4 metre performance sailing catamarans - refer www.silkline-catamarans.com
for a basic start-up page.
