Yachts bound for the very popular Keci Buku in Turkey should be aware that there has been a series of thefts from yachts this year. We were only the most recent victims yesterday when Toucan Tango was boarded and robbed of $1800US while we were swimming not 70 metres away.

The thief was very professional, swam from shore and boarded the boat when the stern was out of our direct view, went through every locker in seconds and found our "secret" hiding place for cash with little difficulty.

Yachts should also be aware that the police appear to provide no deterrent to this type of crime. None of the previous robberies have been solved and there is no local police presence in the bay.

Keci Buku, knwn also as Orhaniye Bay, is also the location from which the yacht Valerie Jean was recently stolen.

Forewarned is forearmed!

This past summer (2005) we anchored in Dacha,Turkey a delightful small town. We were right off the main marina/dock and with other boats anchored around. We locked the companionway hatch but left deck hatch open for ventilation. While we were ashore having dinner thieves entered the boat and took jewellry and money. As we were not tied to the shore the theft had to be handled by the Coastguard who called in the Jandarma. They came and tried to take fingerprints etc. Probably nothing can or will be done, but be warned, there are thieves about in Turkey.
