John Hally of the Club Nautico, Cartagena, Colombia, writes:

For advice to cruisers I think it worth noting that Barranquilla is considered by some as the centre of the Atlantic drug cartel operations and for the time being I would not recommend that cruisers stop there (incl. entrance to Rio Magdalena, Punta Hermosa, Puerto Colombia). Cruisers have found the 5 bays (North of Sta. Marta) beautiful and welcoming. So, from Rodadero(South of Sta. Marta) plan a non-stopper to Cartagena which as always will provide cruisers with a safe/warm welcome. I know of no incident(in recent history) on the Atlantic coast of Colombia where a cruiser has been boarded by criminals while underway; the whole area is patrolled intensively by both the American and Colombian Coast Guard.
