I am intending to sail from Pohnpei to Rabaul, in May 2004, but have concerns
about the active volcano in the vicinity. Would you be able to let
us have some information regarding the status of things at the present time?
Answer from a local contact of Noonsite: Rabaul is quite safe, not so pretty, but people are living & working there ok. Three or 4 hotels operating well. The volcano is gurgling away letting off steam happily, but no immediate threats current. A pretty good volcano watch is always on with constant updates. Not like time before when little was known of dangers. The Duke of Yorks, so close & so gorgeous is only a few miles off. A yacht probably safest thing to have there.
