Like many sailing ports in the Caribbean, Marigot Bay experienced a
number of petty thefts over the years. Unlike many sailing ports,
the people of Marigot Bay did something about it.
Last September, the restaurants, hotels and businesses of
Marigot Bay got together to fund a Water Patrol. It has been 100
percent effective. Not one boat has reported any problems concerning
the bay. Not one dinghy has been stolen. There has not been a single
boat break-in. There is no harassment on the water and the fruit
vendors go home at 6:00 p.m.
“This is better than we hoped for,” says Captain Bravo, who
helped launch the service. “Marigot Bay is as clean and safe and
friendly as I have ever seen it in my 20 years here. I love this
Bay.”
JJ the owner of J.J.’s Paradise expressed what many Bay
residents felt. “Everyone is more relaxed knowing the patrol is out
there. The boat people spend more time at the restaurant and bar,
which is good for me. And I spend more time cooking my famous crab
dinners, which is good for them."
The boat patrol is administered and maintained by the Marigot
Bay Business Association (MBBA). “We are a community organization
that works to keep the bay clean and safe and beautiful”, says David
Wallace, MBBA president. “The St. Lucia government has been very
cooperative, but it is the men and women of the bay who put this all
together.”
“Marigot Bay is a safe harbor during bad weather because it
such a deep bay. We are now the safest, cleanest and most beautiful
bay in the Caribbean as well.”
