The Internet Users Society on the Polynesian Island Nation of Niue has launched the world’s first nation-wide free internet access service, using wireless technology (WiFi). This technology is perfect for such islands, where rain, lightning, salt water and high humidity cause major problems with conventional copper wire links. In addition, WiFi technology is licence-free, by International Agreement, for both the user and the provider.
A substantial portion of Niue's tourism comes from visiting yacht traffic during the non-cyclone season. Yachts with onboard laptops with WiFi cards and external antennas will be able to moor in the harbour and access full Internet services from their vessels, free of charge.
Earlier this spring, a free broadband Internet services was introduced at the Internet Cafe in Niue.
