Topic: Cruising Information

Question: We want to have a custom fiberglass sailboat built for us overseas at a boatyard in a country with low labor rates. Do you have any information that would help us?

Answer: Having a hull built abroad is often the easier part. What doesn't always work out well is the finishing, interior installations, etc. With this in mind I suggest you look at New Zealand where labour rates are still lower than in Europe and the USA.

Also, I came across a really good boatyard in Chile (Valdivia), run by a German (Alex Wopper) who builds mainly catamarans in fibreglass - mostly for the US market. His prices are very good and quality very good. Contact him at: alwoplas@telsur.cl

Regards...and good luck
