Q: I have started looking into the various marinas where I could leave my boat for a few months. Someone suggested Bayswater marina in Auckland itself, as it is convenient for the city. I also heard good reports about Gulf Harbour. What would you recommend?

A: Gulf Harbour

Costs based on 50' - 18m marina berth 21.20/day. Live aboard charge $2.00/day. Must have temporary import certificate. Must book ahead.

Transport to City Bus or Ferry

The Gulf Harbour Ferry operates every working day (Monday - Friday, excluding Public Holidays) departing from Z Pier at Gulf Harbour at 7.10am, arriving in Auckland at 8am; and returning from Auckland at Pier 3 at 5.35pm, back at Gulf Harbour by approx 6.15pm. Adult fare $24 Return.

Bayswater

16m marina $26/night. +15% for Live aboard. Vessels must be insured and pay one month in advance. Live aboard uncertain. Must book ahead no guarantees.

Tutukaka, near Whangarei

The cheapest marina to leave a yacht is at Tutukaka. 14m is NZ$267 per month for example. Chris Bone from the Whangarei Marine Promotions Group will take full responsibility for boats berthed at Tutukaka on behalf of overseas owners for NZ$150pcm. This is a weekly visit, bilges check, engine run ventilate, check lines etc. Will check boat during bad weather. Tel. 09 4344 066 or 0256212214, chris@whangareimarine.co.nz
