Currency add: The bank Banco del Estado de Chile opens from 9 am till 1 pm Mon-Fri. Foreigners are not allowed to change their Chilean pesos back into US$ but Chileans can. It is generally advantageous to use local currency. Travellers checks and credit cards also accepted.

Events add: Between February 9 and 22, the residents celebrate the TAPATI RAPA NUI (Rapa Nui Week). During this annual, week to 14-day long, festival, the Rapa Nui people will celebrate both ancient & modern traditions of the island.

During the winter, the young people organize The Tokerau song festival.

Emergencies: The Port Captain Office (Chilean Navy) monitors 24/24 hours the following frequencies for distress and emergencies:

HF CH 821 [ TX on 8255.0 and RX on 8779.0 ]

HF CH 421 [ TX on 4125.0 and RX on 4417.0 ]

VHF CH 16

They also monitor the EPIRB alarm frequencies. Contact the Easter Island Chilean Navy by phone (56-32) 100 567 / 100 469 or by email servicioscproa@directmar.cl

Weather p 393 add: Weather reports are available 3 times a day by listening or calling the port captain's office on VHF CH 16 (Spanish, French & English spoken). Wind changes will be announced so you can move your boat to a safe side of the island in time.

Procedure on Arrival : add Call the port captain before arrival on VHF 16. He will contact the different authorities (customs, immigration, health dpt & agriculture) and arrange a meeting: either you will meet everyone in his office or they will visit you on your boat. Depending the weather conditions, the officials may visit you at other places than Hanga Roa.

Hanga Piko changes: The small harbour at Hanga Piko has been enlarged and dredged to about 2.5 m although should only be used in an emergency. As the entrance is very difficult, most yachts engage the services of a pilot, for a fee of US$100. Boats of a maximum length of 18 m and not much more draft than 2 m can find shelter inside. There is space for two or three boats.

The final decision whether a boat will be allowed in or not depends on the port captain. The small basin is sheltered from all wind directions, but surge causes serious problems at all times, so boats must be tied fore and aft to rocks ashore. If one of the inside boats wishes to leave, all others have to move too. Some boats have been trapped here in the past in unusually bad weather with no way out because of huge swell. The harbour should be abandoned under heavy surge conditions as several yachts were damaged when this occurred.

Immigration new text: No advance visa is required. Some nationalities may need a visa, which will be issued on arrival.

Health add text: You will see a Health officer on arrival. Vaccination certificates are not required, no fee.

Documents add: If you are sailing towards Chile, you will be required to have the Pilot Charts of Chile on board. Chilean Pilot charts are available at the Port Captain's office for less than 10 US$/set.

Fees add: For boats exceeding 25 tons, a fee will be required for the check-in/out procedure.

If you are sailing to Chile, you will have to pay a Lights & Buoys fee (about 1 US$/ton).

The entrance fee to the Rapa Nui National Park is 10 US$ and is collected at the entrance to Orongo, at the top of the Rano Kau volcano.

Restrictions: delete "Around 1/3 of ... charged" as it is mentioned above.

add "You are not allowed to bring ashore any fruits, vegetables, meats or any garbage of such but you are allowed to keep them aboard."

add at end of paragraph: In settled weather, there is a small loading dock in Anakena bay.

Tahiti Nui

Restrictions p 431 add: Most anchorages on the east coast of Bora Bora have been restricted for lagoon and ecological reasons. It is now not allowed to anchor further than 1 NM east of Bora Bora airport. Also due to a drastic drop in Manta Ray population (over 80%) in the last year all cruising yachts are requested not to attempt to snorkel in the area. For information you may call 677237, or call on channel 16 the vessel Maraamu IV. After a serious stagnation of the lagoon post December 2001, large areas of coral on the east, and southeast coast died, and to allow a regrowth of this natural phenomena, all access to this area is restricted.

Samoa

p 422 Apia, Procedure on Arrival delete The authorities insist that all clearance is done through an agent. Slade Brothers offer this service for a fee.
