Over recent months we have progressively been upgrading noonsite’s capabilities to make discovery of, finding and sharing the quantity of information on the site easier. One of the problems with having such a huge source of information is making it easy for our users to find what they are looking for, and more importantly keep abreast of what’s going on in the part of the world they are cruising.
Other changes to the design of the site to facilitate this further are being worked on, but one of the first improvements we have made is to get involved with an easy and simple way of distributing site information.
It won’t have gone un-noticed that a new button has appeared at the top of every page (Follow@NoonsiteEditor) with a little blue bird. This means we are now “connected” to Twitter. For those who are unfamiliar, or perhaps a little cautious about getting involved with this social networking tool, here is a simple explanation as to what you can gain by “following” noonsite, and how easy it is to do so.
Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character messages called Tweets. It is an easy way to discover the latest news related to subjects you care about - it is like being delivered a newspaper whose headlines you will always find interesting. You can discover news as its happening, learn more about topics that are important to you, and get the inside scoop in real time.
Now Noonsite.com is on Twitter our followers can receive the latest updates for cruising sailors in real time. Joining Twitter is simple, and will not clog up your email inbox – once you have created your free account and followed @NoonsiteEditor you can easily check updates from us through your computer or mobile device via www.twitter.com, rather than your email account. Twitter feeds can be viewed as and when desired and are always available. Those that do not interest you, just ignore, no problem.
Once signed up to Twitter you won’t get bombarded with unnecessary emails and unwanted information. Occasionally Twitter may send you suggested websites that use twitter which you may also want to follow, however if you are simply a “follower” rather than a “tweeter” (i.e. sending tweets yourself), these are few and far between.
To Follow@NoonsiteEditor, click the button on the top of any page on Noonsite.com and a pop-up will open asking you to sign in to Twitter. If you do not already have an account, click the sign up link on the top right of the pop-up or go directly to https://twitter.com/signup. You will need to register with your full name, email address, and choose a password then click ‘Sign up for Twitter’. On the next page, you can select a username (usernames are unique identifiers on Twitter) — type your own or choose one suggested by Twitter. With lots of users already signed up, you may need to be creative to choose a username that is not already taken. Finally click ‘Create my account’. Twitter will send a confirmation email to the address you entered on sign up, click the link in that email to confirm your email address and account. You will be guided through a few start up tips when you first sign in to help you get going.
Further information about how to start using Twitter is available by visiting https://support.twitter.com/groups/50-welcome-to-twitter/topics/204-the-basics/articles/215585-twitter-101-getting-started-with-twitter.
Don’t miss out! This is the only way to find out what is going on at noonsite (apart from waiting for the end of month report or trawling through the pages that interest you to find out any updates) and the ideal source for discovering new information when you arrive in port and get on-line.
