Lenakel : Profile
First office to be visited is quarantine, who charges a fee of 3000 vatu (approx. $30). There is a bank in Lenakel where foreign currency can be changed, but there is no ATM. The bank will advance cash and allow you to pay by Credit card. Cash advances can also be had at Evergreen Bungalows.
Immigration formalities are completed at the police station (2000 VT).
There is now a permanent customs office on the island, but it might be wise to check it is manned before visiting. Yachts are allowed to wait in Port Resolution until clearance has been obtained.
Being able to now stop at Tanna is a great advantage as it allows yachts arriving from the east or south to make landfall at Tanna first and visit other islands en route to capital Vila, rather than face a tough beat to windward to visit some of the southern islands of Vanuatu.
It is a 15min. car trip from White Grass Cove to Lenakel.

Lenakel is located on the west coast of Tanna, and is not a good harbor because of exposure to SE swell. A more protected mooring (approximately 5nm North) has been introduced (2006) in Whitegrass Cove by Tanna Evergreen Bungalows (see Shore Services for more details). It consists of 2 yacht moorings (19º26.59'S, 169º13.29'E). Approach with care and pass on either side of the isolated blind breaker marked by 2 red plastic buoys (the Northern approach should be preferred). It is not possible to anchor here as it is 60/70ft deep. The dinghy landing can be difficult at low tide, but a small boat channel through the coral reef is being planned.
Traditionally cruising yachts use Port Resolution on the east coast as a base while visiting the island, from where one can cross the island to Lenakel on local transport (see Port Resolution pages), but this is quite a rolly anchorage.
The Black Sands anchorage is about 4nm north of Whitegrass Cove.
