U.K.: Update on Search for British yachtsman missing for a week

Kiel Canal North Sea Lock

Posted 12th July 2014

The British yachtsman who went missing for a week has been found alive and well on his yacht in the North Sea.

Charles Pickering, 69, from East Yorkshire, sparked a rescue operation after not contacting his family for one week.

Humber Coastguard launched an extensive air and sea search, and spent more than a day searching 5,000 square miles of the North Sea between Scarborough and Heligoland in Germany.

His family last heard from him while he was sailing near the Keil Canal in Germany.

Pickering was found 80 miles off Spurn Point after setting off an emergency beacon from his 17ft yacht Equinox.

He said his yacht had been blown off course by the storm.

Mike Green, watch manager at Humber Coastguard, told the BBC: "We are all absolutely delighted that this gentleman has been found alive and well.

"It is important that yachtsmen planning this sort of passage have adequate communications and log a passage plan with a shore contact."

A coastguard has made an appeal over a missing British yachtsman who has not been in contact with his family for a week.

The 69-year-old from North Yorkshire, who has not been named, was last seen in the Keil Canal in Brunsbuttel, Germany and spoke to his son by telephone last Friday to say he was planning his journey home in his 17ft yacht Equinox.
Humber Coastguard said it deployed an air search and rescue craft after being contacted by the man's family yesterday. The search will resume today.

An alert has been put out to French, Belgian and Dutch coastguards and police have logged a missing person's alert with Interpol, the coastguard said.
In a statement the coastguard said: "Humber Coastguard request any vessel who believes they may have sighted the yacht to urgently contact any Coastguard Station with information."
