Plymouth : Profile
This huge natural harbour, known as Plymouth Sound, owes a significant part of its present day protection to the mile long breakwater, completed in 1841 after taking 29 years to build.
The Sound is easy to enter round either end of it, but the western entrance, marked with a lighthouse, is the main entrance for commercial vessels and is easier for strangers to identify at night. Just be aware that at high spring tides, the whole breakwater can be awash and hardly visible.
Position 50°20'N, 04°10'W.

Plymouth is a naval port and is controlled by The Queen's Harbour Master. When naval ships are entering or leaving the port, other boats are ushered away from the main channels by the Harbour Master's launch.
There are several anchorages in the Sound, but apart from well up the rivers which feed into it, none offer complete protection from all directions. There are no charges for anchoring here. The most useful being Cawsands Bay, Jennycliff Bay and Barn Pool.
There are no official visitors' buoys, but the yellow buoys north of Drake's Island, opposite Millbay, can sometimes be used if permission is obtained from The Longroom (QHM's office). Of the 4 main marinas, Sutton Harbour is the closest to the city centre. Queen Anne's Battery (QAB) and Plymouth Yacht Haven both have frequent water taxi services to the Mayflower Steps at the Barbican.
