Penzance : Profile
This old market town, lying at the far west of the cornish peninsula, forms a useful port from which to launch a trip to the Scilly Isles, or to wait for suitable weather before rounding Lands End.
Position 50°07.1'N, 05°31.7'W.
Penzance inner harbour, the Wet Dock, provides secure, sheltered berths. It is accessible from 2 hours before, to 1 hour after HW. There are visitors' buoys just south of the entrance which can be used either to wait for the lock, or for an overnight stop in settled weather. In such weather, it is also possible to anchor south of the waiting buoys, in about 2 metres LAT.
The approaches to the harbour are shallow, and in strong on-shore winds it is unsafe to attempt entry. Boats should divert to Newlyn, which although not encouraging yachts to regard it as a regular yacht harbour, does offer a safe, all weather port of refuge when necessary.
