Inverness : Profile

Location

Inverness gives access to the Caledonian Canal, which allows yachts to avoid the hazardous journey round the far north of Scotland when passing from the North Sea into the North Atlantic Ocean.

Docking

The marina is adjacent to the old Longman Quay (now being redeveloped). Inverness Harbour is immediately to port after passing under the road bridge at the head of The Moray Firth.

There are two more marinas inside the Canal, the entrance to which can be difficult in strong winds.

Yachts over 11 metres cannot enter the yacht haven, but must berth alongside the main quay. Prior permission must be received from the Harbour Master.

Boats transiting the canal, need to proceed along the north side of the Firth until the sealock can be seen to port. There is good holding in 8m NW of the lock while awaiting entry.

Sheltered natural deep water harbour 7 miles south west of Chanonry Point (on site of old Longman Yacht Haven) 150 berths with usual marina facilities. Water/electric, diesel berth, 45 ton travel hoist, toilet and bilge pumpout faciliies, full disabled access including crew lift hoist, chandlery. Service facilities for all major engines, full rigging repairs, electronics and sails. Approach - beware large commercial shipping. Check with Interness Pilots on Channel 12 if channel is clear and if no response, proceed with caution and maintain listenining watch on Channel 12. (August 2008)

Seaport Marina at Inverness is at the head of the Caledonian Canal with 55 berths. Popular long term berthing and is accessible four hours either side of High Water. A more comfortable berth than at Longman Quay. Water, electricity, fuel, 40 ton crane, laundry, LPG, pump-out facility and some repairs. Inverness airport 20 minutes away by taxi from marina.
