Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas) - Profile

Location

Hurricane Irma’s double eyewall passed directly over St. Thomas in September 2017 leaving the island with no electricity, communications or transport. To make matters worse, St Thomas was hit again by the outer bands of hurricane Maria, further delaying aid and rebuilding efforts.

Currently, the island’s airport is operational servicing three flights daily to Atlanta, Miami and San Juan. The Governor estimates that the USVI should have 90% of its power back by the end of 2017, while making substantial investments in moving electrical cables in primary and secondary sectors underground. (Update from https://www.sailorshelping.org).

See updates from cruisers visiting this island post-hurricane at bottom of page.

This sheltered harbour lies on the southern coast of the island of St Thomas. Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the US Virgin Islands and is a popular port of call for cruise ships.

Clearance

See the main USVI formalities page for full details of clearance.

Yachts must complete clearance at the ferry terminal CBP Reporting Station.

One of the most common ways to complete clearance procedures is to anchor close to the ferry terminal (Take special care in this area: seaplanes land and take-off regularly.) The captain should then go ashore and obtain preliminary clearance. All crew must then go with their completed papers to customs and immigration at the ferry dock. One crew member is allowed to stay on board as an anchor watch, but he or she will have to clear in person later.

If arriving outside local working hours, report your arrival leaving a brief message with boat name, registration number, date and time of arrival and a return telephone number.

It is the responsibility of the captain to conduct clearance formalities as soon as possible. No one on board should disembark or leave the yacht before clearance has been obtained.

It is possible to proceed directly to a major marina and take a taxi to clear in, but in any case, the captain must notify the CBP of arrival.

The clearance office at Yacht Haven marina is by appointment only and at the present time only for vessels berthed at the marina.

It is not possible to clear in without visiting the CBP office for any nationality, USA included.

Anchorages

It is possible to anchor in the harbour and usually there is plenty of room. There are lots of shops and restaurants right across the street from the sea wall.

Cruising yachts tend to gather at Crown Bay, with anchorage across from the mouth of the marina. Close to Tickles Pub.

Marinas

There are two IGY Marinas in St. Thomas, American Yacht Harbour and Yacht Haven Grande.

At the eastern end of the island, there are several small marinas in Benner Bay, Vessup Bay and around Red Hook.

Update from Joan Conover (SSCA) - SY Growl Tiger - just arrived in the VIs.

St. Thomas is open for business..you just dont want to DRIVE anywhere..recommend taking a tour bus or taxi.

Crown Bay Marina is up and running since the storm, we have a slip with water..electric still being connected. Restaurant is open, laundry is open, free wifi thanks to VIYA and good grocery store here for provisioning (Publix). Good fuel as well.

Charlotte Amalie, all tourist shops (Gucci) are open, there is a museum display on hurricane damages(20.00 bucks entry!!) and three cruise ships in port, two in Charlotte Amalie, and one at Crown Bay.

USCG has cleared the channels but the main harbor has lots of white moorings/buoys which we can't tell what they are for (sunken boats or a new mooring field?). Damaged vessels line the western side of the harbor..and on the Water Island side near Crown Bay, boats are grounded - two or three on the eastern side and several on the northern Water Island side.

There is a great unsung hero on Water Island..a lady (Marion?) who flew back to the USA on at her own cost and came back with 20K worth of supplies and gensets for the island. Will try and find her.

Boat Taxis actively running from Crown Bay. Airport is open. American flying as well as a puddle jumper to San Juan then onto the USA from there. People are needing work..one dock worker is washing cars to put food on the table.

Posted on behalf of Joan (SV Growltiger):

Just got off the phone with Lisa Lord(Crown Bay Marina/St. Thomas), she says the fuel dock is open, has been open for weeks. D Dock is available for up to 45 ft vessels, just no electric, water only, and they have a T-head for over 45ft to 100 ft vessels. Tickles is open, laundry is open, pet store is open, and the PriceMart behind the marina is open as is Home Depot, Lowes, and Kmarts! So recovery in St. Thomas is on going, but vessels can get fuel and slippage for resting up from passages there.

The customs office where yachts are to check in is the ferry terminal, you will see ferry boats parked there, called Edward Wilmoth Blyden Marine Terminal but the address is 3400 Veterans Drive not 5500 Veterans drive which is the administrative office.

The clearance office at Yacht Haven marina is by appointment only and at the present time only for vessels berthed at the marina.

The harbor in May had plenty of space and was pleasant to anchor. there are lots of shops and restaurants right across the street from the sea wall.
