By World Cruising Club — last modified Feb 11, 2014 02:05 PM
Professional sailors, bluewater cruisers and SAIL magazine contributors Andy Schell and Mia Karlsson will be hosting a comprehensive Ocean Sailing Seminar over the weekend of March 22-23 in Annapolis, Maryland through World Cruising Club USA.

Published: 2014-02-11 00:00:00
Topics: Rallies , Cruising Information
Countries: USA

Including industry experts in rigging, sailmaking, weather routing, marine electronics, leadership training and yacht insurance, the annual Ocean Sailing Seminar is a must-attend event for sailors looking to expand their cruising horizons. Whether it's a circumnavigation of DelMarVa or the world, the experts at the weekend seminar will give you the knowledge and inspire the confidence you'll need to achieve your sailing goals.

Seminar open to all

Though World Cruising Club USA is known for its offshore cruising rallies, the Ocean Sailing Seminar is open to any and all sailors interested in going offshore, whether they 'go it alone,' or decide to sail in company. Indeed Andy and Mia's bluewater knowledge draws on their experience sailing their yawl Arcturus alone across the far North Atlantic and into the Baltic, as well as their experience both sailing in and organizing various cruising rallies in the Atlantic and Caribbean, including the ARC Caribbean 1500.

Program Highlights

A Social & Educational Weekend

The weekend kicks off on Friday evening, March 21 with an informal happy hour at the John Barry Irish Bar at O'Callaghan Hotel, where experiences and sea stories will be shared among the participants and seminar speakers. The social aspect of the weekend will continue through Saturday and Sunday, with breakfast and lunch each day and a group dinner on Saturday evening, during which participants will have ample time chat informally with the speakers and other sailors. The Saturday evening dinner will also feature a more light-hearted presentation by Andy & Mia on their various sailing adventures in the Atlantic, Baltic, South Pacific and beyond, geared towards inspiring others to follow their sailing dreams.

Presenters for each lecture are chosen based on their expertise in their fields and their years of experience crossing oceans. Andy & Mia together have over 30,000 bluewater miles and have crossed the Atlantic a combined 5 times. They've been back and forth to the Caribbean on a variety of sailboats, sail their own Arcturus in the Baltic and have raced offshore.

Other speakers include:

  • Mike Meer of Southbound Yacht Rigging at Port Annapolis
  • Circumnavigators Rick & Julie Palm
  • Captain Paul Exner of Modern Geographic Expeditions
  • Miles Poor of MRP Refit who have sailed tens of thousands of miles on their Tayana 55 Karina
  • Chuck O'Malley of Chesapeake Sailmakers
  • Bob Campbell, the 'Yoda of Marine Electronics' and owner of Marine Electric Systems
  • David Cannon of Weather Routing Inc.
  • Caribbean 1500 head safety inspector and offshore sailor Peter Burch
