  Cape Cod : Profile

Docking

This long, curving peninsula provides interesting sailing areas both on the north and south shores. The eastern side is very inhospitable with no viable refuges. The main ports on the southern side are Falmouth, Hyannis and South Yarmouth. On the northern and western coasts are the sheltered bays of Barnstable Harbor, Wellfleet Harbor, and at the north western tip of Cape Cod is Provincetown Harbor. This is the site of the historic landfall of the Mayflower and its excellent harbour is marked by the Pilgrim Monument.

Bass River
This leads to the town of South Yarmouth and provides a useful anchorage.

Cape Cod Canal
This 15 mile long, deep-draft seaway, connects Cape Cod Bay with Buzzards Bay and provides a sheltered short-cut between the sailing areas of Newport and Matha's Vineyard, and Plymouth and Boston to the north.

Hyannis Harbor
This is an important harbour of refuge. It can be clearly identified by its red and white checkered daymark on Great Rock and the abandoned lighthouse tower on Point Grimmon.
