Niuafo'ou Island : Profile

Location

Niuafo’ou is in the most northerly group of Tongan islands and is an active volcano. At the centre of the island is a huge lake of bubbling water. The coast is steep and rocky with just a few black sand beaches. It is famous for its special postal stamps.

Clearance

This is an official Port of Entry.

All the government buildings are in the village of Angahā on the northern side of the island.

Docking

The anchorage off the main village of Angaha is not good. A better one is to be found on the northwestern side of the island.

The only good landing place is on the western side of the island, at Futu. The villages are all on the northern and eastern sides.

The post office, telecommunications station and grass air strip are in Angahā.

There is a limited domestic air service to Vava’u and Tongatapu.
