Thailand, Phuket: AIS Requirement Update

By Bob Mott — last modified Nov 13, 2014 02:18 PM
Our thanks to our SE Asia Regional Editor, Bob Mott, for this report on the latest state of play re. AIS requirements for all yachts visiting Phuket.

Countries: Thailand

Presently there appears to have been no effort to enforce the rule whereas foreign yachts entering Phuket are to be fitted with AIS type “B” transponders.

Offices at the One Stop Shop on Chalong Pier have notices up stating the regulation, but no one is asking for AIS to be installed, not even when questioned by owners checking in. It appears that the enforcement isn’t the responsibility of Immigration, Customs, Quarantine or even the Harbour Department, even though the Harbour Department head made the announcement at a press conference at Royal Phuket Marina (see September news item about the announcement).

It may be the duty of a 5thgroup, known as the “VTMS” Department (standing for “Vessel Tracking and Management System”) to enforce this new rule, but this is an unqualified observation.

The situation could all change abruptly, so be prepared for further notification on Noonsite of the enforcement of the regulation. But for the time being I suggest that no one gets to bothered about the regulation.

If it does come into play I am informed boats will be given 10 days to arrange the installation after which they need to report back to the controlling office – whichever one that happens to be.

There are at least 5 retailers in Phuket selling Type “B “ Systems including the following brands - GME Australia, Raymarine USA , Simrad USA, Vesper New Zealand, Matsutec China. There is one company able to rent units on a monthly basis.  They should all be carrying adequate stock for requirements if the regulations are eventually enforced. These companies are listed on noonsite in the electronics section for Phuket.

Systems are also available in duty free Langkawi.

Feedback is more than welcome from visiting yachts checking into Phuket (which is the main AIS destination) and also Krabi which has also been announced as a future AIS destination along with Phang Nga, Trang and Satun provinces. Send feedback to noonsite@noonsite.com.
