Description:

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and is located on the Chao Phraya River at the head of the Gulf of Thailand. It is one of the world’s top tourist destinations but not a simple place to visit by yacht. The city is approx. 30NM up-river from the mouth.

Cruiser Highlights:

It is a very busy, chaotic city with a vibrant night-life, a maze of shops and a range of dining experiences.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

The approach channel begins about 6 miles south of the river entrance and is constantly dredged and well marked. Minimum depth is 7m. The passage up to Samut Prakan wide and suitable for ocean-going ships.

The river is very wide and has depths up to 12m with the tide running up to 2 knots. As with any large commercial river, there is a lot of debris in the water including many plastic bags.

A trip up-river to the city will likely appeal more to motor yachts than masted yachts. The first bridge has enough air clearance for a masted yacht, however, beyond that there are a further 5 bridges before you reach the city centre, none with enough height for a masted yacht and no where to stop between them.

Position:

13°29.83’N, 100°37.83’E (entrance channel)
