Spain : Balearics
This group of islands comprise of three principal islands, Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza, plus the three smaller islands of Formentera, Cabrera and the uninhabited Dragonera. They lie off the coast of Spain between France and the coast of north Africa and are now a major cruising destination.
Majorca(Mallorca) is the largest island and is the most commercialised. Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearics, is a major yachting centre with several marinas and good repair facilities.
Ibiza, again quite a busy island, has very attractive white sand beaches and clear blue water and good facilities.
Minorca (Menorca) is a much quieter island and large parts of it are protected from development by the government, but yachts are also catered for.
Formentera, lying just south of Ibiza, is just 30 sq.miles and has very little development. It is the most tranquil of the islands. It does also have some limited yachting services (a small marina and a fuel dock). Advanced booking is advisable here in the high season.
Cabrera, a tiny piece of land off Majorca’s southern cost, is a protected nature reserve and access is restricted. Permission to visit must be obtained prior to sailing there. Access to some areas of the island is forbidden. Boats may anchor exclusively in the port of Cabrera, the maximum number at any one time is 50.
