Vigo : Profile
The Ria de Vigo is a 15 mile long arm of the sea, protected across its entrance by the Islas Cies, providing a safe, sheltered harbour.
The Port of Vigo is ideally positioned on the Vigo Estuary and has, for many years, been the leading seafood port in Galicia. Vigo, which was first settled as a small fishing village, has become Galicia´s most populous city with successive areas of land having been reclaimed from the sea. Its origin as a fishing port has left the old town with an interesting maritime atmosphere.
This city is an excellent base from which to visit the towns and villages along the Vigo estuary and the Cíes Isles that form part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands.
All marine services are available here.
There are numerous anchorages, the most attractive being near the entrance, especially on east side of Islas Cies.
Most of the marinas have limited space for visitors. It is best to call ahead. Several of them are being, or have recently been, extended.
Moorings are also available further up the Ria, beyond the Rande suspension bridge, but watch for the shallow depths.
