Description:

Oyster Pond is located on the eastern coast of the island and is a town that is split between the French side of St. Martin and the Dutch side of Sint Maarten.

With the settling of a long-running border disagreement between France and the Netherlands in May 2023, the Sint Maarten/St. Martin border now runs through the middle of Oyster Pond, thereby giving an equal share of the water to both sides.

The southern part of Oyster Pond will be retained by Sint Maarten (Kingdom of the Netherlands) and the northern part to St. Martin (French Republic).

See this News item for details on the border settlement.

Oyster Pond has been greatly affected by several Hurricanes over the years, especially Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017. Many  yachts, homes, resorts, restaurants and cars were completely destroyed. Although there has been some progress in restoring the town of Oyster Pond, the destruction caused by these two hurricanes can still be seen.

See entry St Martin/Oyster Pond.
