These remote islands form several distict groups. The nearest of the outer islands, the Amirantes, lie 130 miles SW of Mahé.
Beyond them is the Farquhar group, which lies between 250 miles and 300 miles further to the SW. It consistes of a shallow bank of sand and coral, surrounded by a shallow lagoon, only part of which is navigatable.
The most distant of these is the Aldabra group, 630 miles SW of Mahé. It consists of 3 atolls, Aldabra itself, Cosmoledo and Astove plus the raised limestone platform island of Assumption. This facinating place is a World Heritage site.
Only Assumption and Aldabra carry skeleton staff whilst both Cosmoledo and Astove are at present uninhabited.
The following islands are managed by the Island Development Company (IDC): Alphonse Island, Bijoutier, Coëtivy, Desroches, Farquhar, Poivre Atoll, Platte, Providence Atoll, Remire, Silhouette and St. François. Contact IDC for permission to to land.
