Fort Bay (Fort Baai) : Profile

Clearance

Contact the harbour master on Channels 16 or 11. In settled weather conditions one may be able to pick up a mooring off Fort Bay while clearing in ashore. Otherwise it may be necessary to carry on to the more protected anchoring area on the NW side of the island, between Ladder Bay and Well's Bay where several moorings (yellow with blue stripe) have been laid for visiting yachts. From here, Fort Bay is best reached by dinghy. You should proceed ashore and clear with the harbour master at the government building near the pier. Hours are 0800-1700 Monday to Saturday. You can check in and out at the same time, even if staying a few days. A yacht is allowed to anchor in one of the other anchorages and then visit Fort Bay by land or dinghy to clear. The alternative is to use the services of an agent.

Docking

The anchorage here is only comfortable in calm weather. There is (usually) one yacht mooring buoy and it may be possible to use the ship's mooring if it is available. Call the Harbour Master.

Two other anchorages are available; Ladder Bay and Well's Bay. The latter should not be used in northerly swells. There are mooring buoys in Ladder Bay and these are best used if free.
