Portimao : Profile

Location

Located at the mouth of the River Arade, Portimao is a natural harbour. It is conveniently just 35 minutes drive from Faro airport, 100 metres from the well known Praia de Roche and opposite the village of Ferrragudo.

The river also provides access to the ancient City of Silves. Sadly because of two low bridges over the river at Portimão it is impossible to go up the river with a yacht or a flybridge motor cruiser, however one could anchor just inside the breakwaters at the entrance to the Arade and use a tender for the trip.

Portimão Marina opened in 2004 and has a great deal to offer.

Report to Marina office with passports and ships papers where all formalities carried out with copies to the usual officials. None need to be seen but non-EU regisgtered yachts, or those carrying non-EU citizens may be visited by one or more sets of officials in the days after arrival

Docking

Portimão Marina is located on the west side of the entrance to this fishing port. It is 2 miles up river from the harbour, just before two low road and rail bridges. Be aware that the flood and ebb streams run hard here, so it is necessary to berth bows to the stream.

There is also an anchorage, in 4m, inside the east mole, but is is subject to wash from the ferries. An alternative anchorage may be found in the small creek about a mile from the entrance, on the eastern side of the river.

37°08'N, 8°32'W. 620 berths in this very spacious, full service marina. On arrival there is a long reception and re-fuelling pontoon just a short walk from the marina office. Marine Police, Customs and Immigration also have their offices in this circular building.
Fuel, chandlery, LPG, WiFi, restaurants/bars. Daily mini bus service to the Modelo Hypermarket and Portimão town centre.
The Marina Boatyard is situated in the Portimão Fishing Port, 50 ton/6m beam travelift, storage ashore, high pressure cleaning, bilge water drain, locker rental, painting / antifouling.
