03.10.2014: morning LT: Posn: near Krangket Island, Madang, Papua New Guinea, SW Pacific Ocean.

A luxury cruiser owned by the Australian media magnate Kerry Stokes was boarded by thieves while at anchor.  The thieves boarded from a rowing boat and confronted the crew.  Undisclosed items were stolen and the thieves escaped.  Incident was reported to the Police. (Sydney Morning Herald, OCEANUSLive)

Further details on the above incident

The vessel had refuelled at Madang and then sailed for Krangket Island. Mr Stokes and his family did not arrive in the area until Sunday 5 Oct 14.  He and his family had been travelling up there for years and the people up there are wonderful.  He did not wish to make an issue about this incident, but it was insisted that the PNG Police were informed.

Some comments to think about, based on feedback from noonsite contacts in Papua New Guinea:
Madang is the closest 'big' town on the coast to the Highland areas of Goroka and Mt Hagen, where life is tough and competitive for the locals. They head to areas like Madang, Port Moresby and Lae to try and find work. Many find that they can't get any work or anywhere to stay, and life becomes even more desperate.

It is recommended to stay away from Madang and mainland PNG in general. Whilst many have cruised that area and not had any problems, it seems that if something is going to go wrong it will be close to the mainland, and close to the major centres. Don't let your security lapse because you think everyone is so friendly. Most Papua New Guineans are incredibly friendly and giving and this is an amazing place to cruise. But there are always going to be people struggling and desperate, and they are in those bigger towns, or close by.

It is incredibly unfortunate, but hopefully this was an isolated incident.
