  Kavieng : Profile

Location

Kavieng is the main port on New Ireland. The harbour is formed by three connecting islands and is very sheltered from the west and the east, but is exposed in northerly and southerly winds.

Clearance

Report your arrival to the Customs and Immigration Officials at the Government Wharf.

Docking

Gas, diesel, LPG refills, and provisions are available here. For yachts heading north for FSM, Palau, or points north, or coming south from FSM, Kavieng is a useful provisioning and refuelling stop.

Most people are friendly and helpful, but basic precautions should be taken however, and it is recommended not to leave the boat after sunset. The safest anchorage is off the Nusa Island, in the Duck Pond (02 35.11S, 150 46.91 E), where there are people who are only too happy to keep an eye out for the many yachts that anchor there.

Adam and Danielle Smith operate a yacht charter business from Nusalik Island, (next to Nusa Island Retreat) across the harbour from Kavieng, Papua New Guinea. They are available to share information to anyone sailing through the area. Contact Adventures in Paradise Yacht Charters, Tiki Turtle Eco Adventures, P.O. Box 544, Kavieng, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, Email: tikitu@adventuresinparadise.com.pg

Call VHF channel 69 on arrival as both Adam and Danielle Smith and Nusa Island Resort monitor the channel all day, every day.

Kavieng is an excellent place for reprovisioning, as well as if you have any issues in regards to your motors or fridges, as there are people here who can help.
