As of 22 February 2020, Puerto Armuelles is closed for checking in or out of the country. Both the reason for this and the length of the closure is unknown.

The point of contact is the port captain,

    Reported by Dirk Lison:

Clearing in and out here is easy, the port-captain (1st stop, at the base of the big pier) will help putting copies of all paperwork together for port, immigration, customs, quarantine. Then he will walk with the boat crew to see all these officials.

Costs in March 2019, receipts given for each, based on reports of two boats (one checking in, one checking out):

    Customs $20
    Immigration $25 for 2 people
international Zarpe (when checking out to Costa Rica) $4.25
    Port fee $6.50
Panama cruising permit (when checking into Panama) $185
Quarantine ~$60, if the official is available, otherwise waived.

The old pier has deteriorated further, there is no ladder to climb up anymore. The port captain recommends landing the dinghy on the north side of the pier, which can be difficult due to swelling.

I wanted to give some positive feedback for Puerto Armuelles as an entry and exit port for the Pacific side of Panama.

We cleared in and out of Panama there with no hassle at all. The port captain filled out all the forms, copied all our documents and helped us with our crew list… We obtained all of our exit papers in about 45 minutes and when we came in it took about an hour to clear.

There is good holding in about 25 feet of water by the banana dock. Basically an easy in and out stop with good shopping, diesel available at $2.00usd a taxi ride away and friendly efficient service.

I don’t speak Spanish.. but they all understood what I wanted and helped a lot. The very positive experience there.
