Sited to the south of the area of open water known at Hustadvika, Molde is a useful port in which to await favourable weather for the passage north.
In the summer months, the Redningsselskapet (Norwegian Sea Rescue Service) provides a convoy service across this stretch of coast to Kristiansund.
