  Tanapag Harbour (Saipan) : Profile

Clearance

Avoid entering port for clearance on weekends as the overtime charges are fairly hefty. The approaches to the harbour are well marked.

The best berthing is now at Smiling Cove Marina where a new Transient berth for visiting yachts has been constructed. Customs, Immigration and Quarantine can be done here.

The main wharf (Charlie dock) attracts a US$30 fee, although Clearance is possible here. Contact the Port Captain on VHF Ch. 16 for directions on where to moor.

Docking

Smiling Cove Marina, located north of the American Memorial Park in Garapan, now has a transient pontoon especially for visiting yachts. The marina is reasonably well protected, but is not safe in a typhoon.

Outer Cove Marina, located on the east of the island in Tanapag harbour, almost due west of Monagaha Island, is a new marina with fixed concrete docks. Fuel, ice and supplies from a mobile store are available.

The inner harbour does provide good shelter, but it is on a first come, first served basis and it gets very crowded.

Smiling Cove Marina
The entrance to the marina channel is fairly tight and the deep water is found by keeping the wall at the entrance and along the channel close to Port. The high tide depth in the basin is 10 to 14 feet. The transient berth has water on tap (not potable) however Fresh Reverse Osmosis water is available, free Wi-Fi and 110 volt 3 pin American shore power. Fees for a 40ft boat the first 3 days are free then the charge is US$8 per day. There are toilets (but no showers) and rats can be a problem. Security cameras and a guard at night.
