Alofi : Profile
ZKN Niue Radio keeps a 24-hour watch on both VHF and HF. On arrival contact Niue Radio on VHF Channel 16 and they will contact customs and arrange clearance. Clearance must be gained before coming ashore.
After obtaining clearance from customs the rest of the formalities are usually completed ashore in Alofi.
The captain should report first to customs, at the top of the hill, then police and immigration. Passports may have to be stamped at the airport. The agriculture officer can be telephoned from the police station. Occasionally the agriculture officer may waive the inspection.
There is an anchorage off the settlement of Alofi, but it offers no protection from westerly winds. Twenty moorings have been put down by the Niue Yacht Club for visiting yachts. These moorings are 2-5 ton concrete blocks with large orange floats. The moorings are checked regularly and the northernmost is a double block chained together, suitable for larger yachts.
Contact Niue Yacht Club on Channel 10 or 16 for mooring allocation. The club also has an HF radio and they monitor 4125 or 4417 kHz around 0600 UTC from June to November.
There is a charge of $5 per day.
Landing with your dinghy can be an interesting experience as there is no beach, just a concrete jetty. If there is much surge, the tender must be lifted by the dock crane onto the wharf, where there is a trolley for moving it.
