  Chatham Islands : Profile

Clearance

This group of Islands lies 450 miles east of the New Zealand mainland. It is mainly visited by people interested in its ecology. The largest island in the group is Chatham Island, where Port Waitangi is located.

Prior to visiting the Chathams in a private vessel, the New Zealand Marine Safety Authority (MSA) must be contacted.

Docking

Approximately 700 people live on the Chathams. There is no public transport, but it is possible to rent a hire car. The roads are unpaved.

The main settlement of Waitangi has a general store. which also sells fuel, and there is another store selling vegetables. A branch of the ANZ bank has recently been opened. A four-bed hospital with a doctor and nursing sisters, serves most medical needs with serious cases being flown to the mainland. The telephone system is connected to the New Zealand network via a satalite link.

There is a small airport with connections to one or other of the mainland cities most days.
