Puerto Morelos : Profile
Puerto Morelos is a quiet, laid back type of place where traditional fishermen can make a living. Tourism, especially diving, is just developing but the town remains unspoilt by it.
It lies between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and is a pleasant stop on the way to Isla Mujeres.
Clearing in here involves paying the traveling costs of Immigration, Sanitation and Agriculture officials to come from Cancun (about $20 each). The marina office will arrange this.
The entrance to Marina El Cid, 1/2 mile SW of the centre of the town, is well marked.
There is a clearly marked channel through the reef to the ferry dock area and the town quay, (which is 1/2 mile north of the dock). Free mooring buoys are available off the main town.
There are also 6 mooring buoys inside the breakwater for vessels up to 45ft or 35 tonnes on the left/port side as you enter the marina. In 2010 the price was fixed at $12 per day for the buoys.
It is no longer possible to anchor in the area just north of the space between the ferry dock and the Town Quay.
You can leave your dinghy on the dock of the local restaurant Los Pellicanos.
