Health

Yellow fever vaccination is required. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended (chloroquine resistant).

Other recommended immunisations are Cholera, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Meningitis, Polio, TB, Tetanus and Typhoid.

Water should be treated before drinking or cooking. There is a water shortage in some of Mauritania and may be rationed. Most water will be transported via tanks – not pipes.

Fees

A list of visa fees can be found at the Mauritanian Embassy London website.

Local Customs

This is a Muslim country and Islamic law must be respected. Sensitivity regarding standards of dress should be observed.  Women should dress conservatively and men must not wear shorts or go shirtless in public. During the month of Ramadan, one should not eat, drink or smoke in public.

LGBT Travelers
If you identify as LGBTQ+, stay out of Mauritania. Violence happens towards LGBT in Mauritania all the time and police either join in on the violence or turn a blind eye to violence towards LGBT people. No businesses are LGBT friendly. Most significantly, the Mauritanian government imposes the death penalty for homosexuality.

Pets

Animals must be declared to Customs on arrival.
