Catania : Profile
An excellent base from which to visit Mount Etna and Taormina, although it is subjected to ash fallout from the volcano. The marinas in Porto Nuovo on the eastern breakwater, offer the cheapest berths and good facilities. It is a fairly long walk to the centre of the town, but worth the effort to see the buildings there.
Porto di Catania is not well protected from the south and strong winds from this direction cause significant swell inside the harbour. The inner harbour, called Porto Veccho, is better protected and is close to the town. There are a few yacht club berths are here.
Porto di Riposto, to the north of Catania, is well protected from this direction, but is more exposed to the NW.
Caito (well protected from all directions) and Ognina Porto Ulisse (exposed to the north) are to the south of the town.
