Apra Harbour : Profile
One should contact harbour control on VHF Channels 16, 13 or 12 (call sign KUF 810) for instructions on where to berth for clearance. One should also ask them to contact immigration and customs. Yachts are directed to the commercial pier on Cabras Island near the two large cranes, or off the Marianas Yacht Club at Drydock Point (the yacht club is preferable). Officials will come to the yacht.
Because of the high frequency of typhoons, arrangements have been made in Apra Harbour for small boats seeking shelter during a typhoon. The refuge area is located in Piti Channel, which can be reached by boats with a maximum draft of 8 feet. The area is reputed to be well sheltered in any kind of winds.
The Marianas Yacht Club, located on Dry Dock Point south of the commercial port, can be used by visitors. Two weeks' free membership is given to members of other yacht clubs, otherwise a fee must be paid for the use of club facilities, which include showers. Some club moorings are reserved for visitors and also privately owned moorings managed by the club are occasionally made available to visitors. The reef around the MYC moorings can be hard to
see and markers are routinely blown away by typhoons. Contact the MYC on VHF Ch 79 for advice.
