 Huahine - Profile

Location

Huahine lies 110 miles NW of Tahiti (or 70 miles from Moorea). Visible from Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora, the two islands of Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti are connected by a bridge and have a combined area of 28 sq.miles.

The road winds 20 miles around the two islands, passing through small villages surrounded by banana, breadfruit, papaya and mango trees. All around both islands are plantations of vanilla, coffee, taro, watermelons and cantaloupe. There are few cars here, so it is perfect to explore on a bicycle. There are many secluded coves and uninhabited islets to visit.

Unmarked Reef south of the entrance to Fare: see details in comments at bottom of page.

A cruising yacht ran aground on the reef at the southern end of the island in July 2017.

Position 16°43'S, 151°02'W.

Clearance

Fare is the Port of Entry.

It is NO LONGER compulsory for all yachts visiting French Polynesia to visit Papeete Customs and Immigration to complete the clearing-in process.

Yachts can now clear in or out of FP with the “gendarmes” offices (French Police) at the ports of entry in the other islands (Marquesas, Tuamotus, Gambiers, Australs etc.) and complete all customs and immigration formalities in the one place.

The Gendarmerie Nationale in Fare can deal with Immigration and Customs.

Full details can be found at French Polynesia Clearance.

Docking

There is no marina here but there are a number of mooring balls available, located in front of the beach or close to the reef between the 2 passes. These are available on a first come, first served basis, and are currently free (although that may change in the future).

There is a convenient floating dinghy dock just in front of the bar/restaurant Huahine Yacht Club. You can also get water from the Yacht Club. Yachts can come to the wooden wharf next to the dinghy dock and fill their tanks.

The public dock in Fare can be used for loading/unloading.

Space for anchoring off the village is limited, but there are many attractive anchorages on both west and east coasts of the island.

There are also 5 mooring balls 5 nautical miles further south at the entrance of the bay of Port Bourayne and 4 more in Baie d'Avea at the south end of the island (note: a yacht anchored in this bay in December 2016 was boarded whilst ashore - see report adjacent).

There are several reports posted adjacent with recommended anchorages.

Motu Murhimahora on the east side of Huahine comes recommended by cruisers as a good anchoring spot. Entry is via Passe Farerea. A local called Paul, whose property fronts onto the beach here, is an incredibly warm and friendly person and will undoubtedly speak with you, not wanting anything other than friendship.

There are about 10 mooring balls in Fare, some of them brand new (November 2016). They are located in front of the beach or close to the reef between the 2 passes.
Very good supermarket (Super U) in Fare.

UNMARKED REEF

If you arecomming up the west side of Huahine there is an unmarked reef just south of the entrance to Fare. It is obvious in the daytime from the breakers but at night (liketwo nights ago) you will not see it and lose your boat. Stay 3 nm offshore until abreast of the range mRkers for the. Hannel. This is out more than you need to be but caution isbetter than a fatal grounding.
