Timor Leste: Receiving Mail

Receiving a mail when cruising can be difficult. This is one cruiser’s experience in East Timor (Timor Leste).

We had 5 packages sent General Delivery to the  Post office. 2 packages that were sent US Postal Service First class mail got there 2 months later…as we were arriving. 2 packages sent USPS Priority Mail never got there, traced through to Indonesia, sat there for a month and then disappeared off of USPS tracking site never to be heard from again. The 4th package was sent from New Zealand via NZ Post, no tracking. 2 months later never showed up.

We also had 4 packages sent FedEx Economy, 3 from the US, and 1 from the Philippines. We also received 1 package via TNT from New Zealand. All arrived in less than 10 days. We had to get a ‘T-number’ to pick it up, which is obtained for free, overnight, from an office near the Obrigado Barracks in Dili ( take a taxi), to be allowed to pick up the package. We sent these to the following address:

Rebecca Childress/SV BRICK HOUSE

c/o Jose Caldas

FedEx Agency Manager

SDV Logistics East Timor

Av. Presidente Nicolao Lobato

Bairo Dos Grilios, Dili, East Timor

Use these numbers

Phone: +670 77255580 / +670 77258920

Send an email to them at [email protected] ( alternate [email protected]) to reconfirm and let them know its close to arriving

They did not charge to receive the package and were very very helpful. They are located 1 block back from Anchorage, same road as Burger King

Note: Import duty is between 5 and 7%…no such thing as “Yacht in Transit”. You pay it right at the SDV Logistics office that you use as your shipping address.

Also- make sure on the invoiced from your shippers only has the value of the parts listed. Have them do a separate invoice to you for shipping. One package we received was $350 parts, and $350 shipping, and we had to pay taxes on $700. No way around it – make sure there is nothing in the box citing shipping charges on an invoice to you.
