Mindelo (Sao Vicente) : Profile
The town is in Porto Grande Bay, which is one of the best harbours in the archipelago. If there is space, tie up at the small yacht jetty or find a good anchorage, and the skipper should go ashore to see Immigration and Port Officials as soon as possible.
Yachts must fly the Q flag until cleared in, after which the courtesy flag must be flown. These can be purchased from the BoatCV office.)
The captain must sign a form that absolves the Port Authority from responsibility in case of theft from the yacht. Ship's papers will be held by the Authorities whilst in the harbour. Passports are no longer retained but must be stamped by the Immigration Office (in the commercial port). Yachts can clear out up to 24 hours before departure. Mindelo is where most yachts go for a quick refuelling stop.
The new marina here is due for completion in April 2007, and will then provide all facilities.
Yachts can also anchor beyond the commercial port, in the northern part of the bay. The harbour is subject to strong gusts, especially in winter, so the anchor must be well dug in. (The old steel motor yacht which previously provided a mooring is no longer there). There is a beach where dinghies can be landed. A local man, Umberto will look after the dinghy, or one of the young men looking for a little income. 1000 escudos per day/per boat (about 10 euros) is a reasonable fee, although much more might be requested and it is advisable to write it down to avoid confusion later. They can also help with general security, water and garbage disposal.
