Niteroi : Profile
Niterói is separated from Rio by the Guanabara Bay. It is a 20 minute ferry ride across the bay to the city.
Be sure to clear out of Rio and into Niterói correctly when moving accross the Bay.
The marinas here are generally less expensive and less crowded.
The Clube Naval Charitas is a popular choice here. From the club it is a very easy walk to the fast ferry, which takes you to downtown Rio (cheaper outside rush-hour).
Also at the club, they also have a public relations officer in the form of Suzi, who is a tremendous help to the cruisers. She is invaluable when it comes to filling gas tanks, dealing with the officials and general advice for the area. Together with her husband Renato they live on a yellow steel sloop at the end of dock 2.

Located on the eastern side of the Rio's vast estuary, the yacht club at Niteroi welcomes visitors. A good option if not needing to be close to downtown Rio: cheaper, safer and calmer than the Royal Yacht Club or Marina Gloria. There are good repair facilities, chandlery and fuel on the club dock.
