Bahamas, Exumas: Sampson Cay Marina will not reopen

Sampson Cay Marina, which closed last month for renovations, will not reopen to the public. Its billionaire owner has decided to make the island and facilities private for use by his family and guests. As reported by Waterway Cruising Guide.

WIth Sampson Cay’s closure, the smaller Compass Cay Marina is now the only facility in the middle Exumas with all-around protection. Several nearby anchorages provide all-around protection, notably in the Pipe Creek area. Fuel is readily available at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, which offers 18 slips and caters to the typical cruising boat; however, their docks can become uncomfortable in strong west to northwest winds — in some instances, the docks must be cleared for the safety of the boats and the marina.

The future Leaf Cay Marina, located just west of Staniel Cay, plans to have over 50 slips with all-around protection, plus resort amenities. “We’re getting ready for a meeting with the (Bahamian) government” to give the resort a green light for dredging and permitting the marina, said Leaf Cay operational partner, Peter Vazquez, who added that it will take at least a year before the marina opens.
