Western Australia, Augusta: New Boat Harbour on target for completion mid-2014

By Department of Transport — last modified Apr 29, 2013 02:38 PM
In August 2011, the Premier announced plans for a new $25 million boat harbour near Augusta in order to provide safe access to the ocean for recreational and commercial boats. The harbour will be located at Flat Rock, about four kilometres south of the town in Flinders Bay.

A sheltered boating facility near Augusta is urgently needed. Navigating the shallow entrance to the Blackwood River can be difficult, while prevailing winds and waves often make launching and boarding boats at the existing Flinders Bay boat ramp unsafe.

The new boat harbour is taking shape with the footprint of the two breakwaters now complete.

Department of Transport (DoT) Project Manager Stephen Smith said both the 150 metre northern breakwater and the 600 metre southern breakwater had been constructed to the minimum breakwater level. “Construction activities will now progressively raise the height of the larger southern breakwater to provide adequate protection from prevailing south easterly winds and wave overtopping during storms,” Mr Smith said.

“At the end of the southern breakwater, the structure’s most exposed location, rocks weighing up to 11 tonne each will be positioned in two layers with the aid of a 100 tonne long reach excavator.”

Construction of the breakwaters is scheduled for completion around August 2013 with completion of the maritime structures (service wharf, pens, boat launching facility) and civil works (roads, car parks, services) scheduled for mid 2014.
