 Gold Coast - Profile

Location

The Gold Coast area of Queensland includes the marina facilities of Southport and a number of marinas within the Broadwater - an area of protected waters between South Stradbrooke Island and the mainland. Two navigable channels connect this area with southern Moreton Bay, accessible to vessels of 2m draft and 22m height. The ocean is accessible through the Gold Coast Seaway, navigable in all except extreme swell conditions.

Position 28°1′S, 153°24′E.

Nearby coverage includes: Scarborough and northern Moreton Bay, Brisbane and the Brisbane River, Manly and southern Moreton Bay.

Clearance

It is now possible to clear into and out of Australia on the Gold Coast.

Australian Border Force and Biosecurity officers will be located at the Southport Yacht Club until 30 June 2018 (designed to coincide with the 2018 Commonwealth Games).

Foreign vessels of less than 50 metres length can be cleared at the boarding station.

The programme is aimed to run for about a year as a test before eventually opening as an official permanent Port of Entry.

For full details on clearing into and out of Australia see Australia Formalities.

Last updated July 2017.

Docking

There are many marinas which are included in this section of coast which stretches from Gold Coast city itself, through Southport and Hope Island to Woongoolba which is opposite the southern end of North Stradbroke Island.

Much of the area is protected by off-lying island and provides many sheltered anchorages in addition to the numerous marinas.

I have found an excellent mechanic here on the Gold Coast - "Irish Pete", as he is known. He has taken control of our engine issues for us. He knows boats intimately and he's fast, utterly professional, inexpensive and completely at home with our Ford.IMG_0500

Pete's diagnosis of our engine's oil consumption problem - worn valve guides, stiff seals and poor valve seating - was made within 10 minutes of firing up the engine. Pistons, rings, liners and bottom end all OK. His diagnosis was confirmed when we got the head off.

Irish Pete has a mobile workshop and will travel all over the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas to work on board or on site. If you are in the Gold Coast area and need mechanical work of any kind, I can recommend Pete unreservedly. His number is +61498 129 383.

And I must also make mention of The Boat Works, a shipyard on the South Coomera River near Southport. This is a wonderful place to get work done. The staff are genial, professional, cooperative and helpful. The yard provides a free courtesy car for you while you are there, and their prices are very reasonable. I haven't met a cruising yacht which is not fulsome in its praise for The Boat Works. I cannot say the same of Gold Coast City Marina, next door.
